How to make your own Bike Streamers

It’s almost week 3 of summer and operation Occupy My Restless Kids is in full effect. Almost every day there is some craft or activity that we do just so I don’t have to hear, “Mom I’m bored”. Which about as grating on the ears, “Mom I’m hungry”. I’ll take bored. I hate cooking in the kitchen in the heat of the summer. In which case, kids, it was time to get outside and make your own bike streamers.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN BIKE STREAMERS

For these you’ll need:

  • Wooden golf tees
  • Eye screws
  • Rubber gloves
  • Thumbtack
  • Ribbons of your choice. I recommend grosgrain as satin ends tend to fray more.
  • Small pliers (as needed)

Most bike streamers that are sold come with this plastic piece of crap.

The kids pull off the streamers and I’ve had more pairs break that I can count.

In which case I went looking for something sturdier that could slide into the handle bars. Most bike handle bars have a small hole at the end of them. At least in kids bikes.

When I came across the golf tees at my local dollar store, I thought there we go.

STEP 1

Take your golf tee and a thumbtack and put that thumbtack ALL the way down to into the golf tee.

This well help you screw in your eye screw.

STEP 2

Next get on your rubber gloves and screw in the eye screw.

TIP: You can try to do this without rubber gloves, but it’s kind of like asking to walk around with a welted bruised thumb for the next week.  This is to help you screw in the eye screw easily.

If you are struggling to do this manually, you can use small pliers to twist it into the golf tee more easily.

STEP 3

Tie your ribbon on the eye screw.

The kids picked out which ribbons they wanted to use and we threaded them through.

I used 20″ (51 cm) of ribbon per each streamer.

STEP 4

Stick them into the handlebars and you’re good to go. Ta-da! You’ve made your own bike streamers.

I tried this out on 3 different bike sizes from a tricycle to a big kid bike and they all fit.

And then you get to keep your kids outside to burn energy.

Happy Kids, Sane Mother. Now go and make your own bike streamers!

Genius, Alex! Love these… And never mind the kids, I’m thinking a bling combination of neon pink and silver for my own genteel ladies’ shopper; Something to raise eyebrows when I go to the store…

Kate read my mind. Also, those will be good for when I’m ready for a walker. I plan to be one of those old ladies who don’t know the time for leopard pants is past…

As always, adorable and creative. And easy!

Yes Alex you should rename this craft. Love, love this idea. I am going make them for mine and my adult daughter’s beach cruisers for our family trip to San Diego. Not quite ready for the walker or leopard pants but one day…

This is fantastic! I love the golf-tee hack – how clever (and we have a living tonne of these all over the house). Now I just have to pick our some fabulous ribbon. I’m sure Lila would prefer Hello Kitty… and I’d want something turquoise. 😉

They think they’re pretty cool but can you believe that they’re at such a point where they expect crafts as an an everyday part of life. Which is great but man does it tire me out. This week I got lectured b/c I forgot to the do butterfly fairy ribbon wands. Or something like that.

Alex… this is so smart! And bonus points for doing something original that hasn’t been done a gazillion times on Pinterest. I love the girls could customize them and even change them out when they get dirty or just tired of the colors they picked. Awesome project!!

Thanks Danielle! It’s true, if the ribbons get messed or they want to change a look they can just choose new stuff to match.

Have you considered painting it? I so want to their bikes but James is like stop it woman, you’re going to get halfway with taping everything off and become really angry at the spokes.

You just saved my butt. I just bought my 4yo daughter a scooter for her birthday and ripped the tassel off of one handle.
It’s attached differently. Razor attaches their streamers with a bungee cord that threads through the handle. I think if I cut off a piece of dowel and put an eyescrew in both ends, it will work.

This is an awesome idea and like you I am tasked with what to do with the kids on every holiday. But I would rather have the projects with kids over COOKING any day! I am organizing a bike parade for my police department and wanted to decorate bikes, but thought it would be far to costly as well as tedious. This will be neither, but will be a HUGE hit for the kids while mm and dad get the kiddos registered. So thanks for this and keep up the good work.

I love this idea! I am going to make some streamers out of hot pink and silver metallic curling ribbon for my 83 year-old mom’s rolling walker. She’ll be styling!

Hello! I am not sure what size they were. I just picked up a generic pack of them when I made these. Sorry I can’t be of more assistance.
